CHAMPION TREES + NIKKI ROUS

We are thrilled to welcome Champion Trees to Shrewsbury.

London-based band Champion Trees is the word rock/folk/diy musical collaboration of Francis Christie (lyrics, vocals, guitars), Lex Pienaar (bass), James Bickford-Smith (keys, violin), Michael Burke (saxophone) and Michele Hromin (clarinet). The lush arrangements of their new, independently released second album A Duck’s Water Off My Back are a marked departure from the lean production of the band’s early material. A Duck’s Water Off My Back has greatly expanded the band’s following, earning coverage on BBC Introducing on Radio 6 and critical acclaim from Outside Noise, who maintain that it features “some of the most beautiful poetry we’ve heard in independent music all year”.

Support comes from Nikki Rous, who is no stranger to performing. Over the course of her childhood and teenage years she travelled the dance festivals and performed at countless shows around the UK. When she turned 17 Nikki won a place at one of the UK’s most prestigious stage schools and around the same time she bought herself a guitar and started teaching herself to play. She discovered artists such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tori Amos, Sinead O’ Connor, Skunk Anansie, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Portishead, Bjork, Alanis Morissette and many more musicians that inspire her still to this day.

Albert’s Songwriters Showcase – Live Folk Night

🗓 Wednesday 1 July | ⏰ Doors open 8:30 pm | 📍 Albert’s Shed, Shrewsbury – Free entry!

Get ready for an unforgettable evening of storytelling, foot‑stomping tunes, and pure folk magic.

We're thrilled to have the legendary Nikki Rous as our host and performer. With over 30 years of song writing experience and a stage history that includes supporting the likes of Jamiroquai and Level 42, Nikki is a true music powerhouse. Though recent health challenges have kept her from the stage, she's incredibly excited to share her passion and her songs with us once more.

Following Nikki, the electrifying duo The Lost Folk Club (Dave Nettleton & Ian Haigh) will take the stage. Their blend of raw acoustic guitar, haunting fiddle, and Americana‑infused edge sits at the crossroads of traditional folk and modern grit. Inspired by The Pogues, Fairport Convention and Martin Carthy, they deliver brooding ballads and soaring choruses that feel both timeless and fresh.

Whether you’re a lifelong folk fan or just curious for a night of great music, Albert’s Shed is the place to be. Bring a friend, bring a smile, and let the songs carry you into the heart of Shrewsbury’s vibrant folk scene. See you there! 🎶

If you didn't manage to come along to our first 'Up Close & Personal' acoustic music session then please do come and support the next one with the truly amazing Nikki Rous

I first booked Nikki back in 2015 where she performed on a regular basis for us at our renowned 'Sunday Sessions', the moment I decided to try a few intimate acoustic sessions at the Stag & Scotch she was the one person I thought of immediately!

Nikki Rous is a local acoustic singer-songwriter and portrait artist. She has been performing her self-penned songs with guitar in hand for over 30 years. For the content of her songwriting, she draws on relatable experiences as well as the emotional challenges of living with disability which produces some very honest and heartfelt songs.

What she crafts is emotive, passionate and moving. She also enjoys putting her own individual stamp on well known cover songs. Over the years Nikki has developed a connected and buoyant rapport with her audiences which makes her performance both scintillating and a genuinely memorable experience.

Nikki has performed alongside and opened up shows for artists such as Jamiroquai, Level 42, James, Miles Hunt, Tom Robinson, Dick Valentine (Electric Six), Nick Harper and many more.

She has graced the stages of venues including The Wolves Civic Halls, The Wulfrun, The Jamhouse, The Glee Club, The Robin 2 and Tamworth Assembly Rooms as well as music festivals up and down the country such as Solfest, Nozstock, Lakefest, Sistafest, Farmer Phil’s Fest and Sunrise Celebration to name a few.

Due to the size of our venue tickets are very limited, so book now to avoid disappointment!

Monday 13th October at 7pm.
